September–October 2023 · 18 days · the great West

David's 30th birthday trip: from San Francisco via the Yosemite and Sequoia national parks to LA, on through Vegas and the Grand Canyon to Albuquerque. A road trip full of movie locations, deserts and natural wonders.

San Francisco

Sep 28 – Oct 1

Afternoon arrival, then three days in the city: Alcatraz, the Golden Gate Bridge, cable cars and Fisherman's Wharf. The perfect start to the grand loop.

Stop 2/7

Yosemite

Oct 1–3

Via the Big Sur Ocean Drive to Yosemite. Half Dome, waterfalls and plenty of hiking — the first big national park of the trip and an immediate highlight.

Sequoia

Oct 4

An early start to see the largest trees in the world. General Sherman and the giant sequoias — you feel tiny among these giants.

Los Angeles

Oct 5–8

Via Oxnard and Neptune's Net (the restaurant from Fast & Furious) to LA. Universal Studios with the Harry Potter tour, the Hollywood Sign, the Walk of Fame, Griffith Observatory and the Paul Walker Memorial.

Stop 5/7

Las Vegas

Oct 9–11

Via Joshua Tree and the Mojave Desert toward Vegas. Area 51, the Hoover Dam and the glittering city itself. A shooting range was a must, of course.

Stop 6/7

Grand Canyon & more

Oct 12

The Grand Canyon, Horseshoe Bend and Antelope Canyon in one day — probably the most spectacular leg of the entire trip.

Stop 7/7

Albuquerque

Oct 13–15

Via Monument Valley to Albuquerque. A self-guided Breaking Bad film location tour and exploring the city before heading home on October 15.
